Tax Forms, A Hedgehog, and Community Service

This Library normally carries the annual federal tax forms and instructions, but this year due to a digital shift, the IRS is not mailing as many tax forms to libraries. After several attempts to contact the IRS to receive our standing order that was placed last year for the 2025 forms, we have have been unsuccessful. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused our patrons. We have reached out to the IRS several times, so if we do get any forms/instructions booklets we will reach out through out social media accounts to let patrons know.

Saturday, February 7th, was “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, families signed up for Library cards, enjoyed making crafts and eating cupcakes. They explored the Library, discovering the Lego® table, computers, interactive table, puzzles, games and coloring areas.

The kids at the Library may not have seen a groundhog, but they did see a hedgehog! For Wednesday, February 11th’s Story and Craft Time, Library Fairy MaKayla read the book “The Night of the Hedgehog” by Tanya Rose. A father wakes his little girl, and together they tiptoe barefoot outside, stepping quietly into the cool nighttime garden. They wait to see it—their snuffling, shuffling nocturnal visitor. And what a treat to behold not just one hedgehog, but a mama and her three adorable, prickly babies, all coming over for a little sip of water before moseying straight into the “hedgehog highway” their human patrons created for them. The kids had a choice of making a sticker or a poke art hedgehog. The library director Cindy Scheu brought in a special guest for a meet and greet, Spikey Bobbie, her very own hedgehog! Our next Story and Craft Time will be on Wednesday, February 18th, starting at 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend with the understanding that this program is intended for preschool patrons.

Wednesday was a busy day as the Library also hosted the Teen Book Club and the Adult Book Club. The Library featured the book “Lunar New Year Love Story” by Gene Luen Yang. For the Adult Book Club it was “The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin.

On Thursday, February 12th, the Library hosted their Tween Book Club featuring the graphic novel “Song of the Sea” adapted by Samuel Sattin. If  you are interested in learning more about any of these book clubs, please stop by the Library or visit our website and social media pages for the latest dates and book club announcements.

Unlucky Friday the 13th turned into a lucky day for an animal shelter in need. Kasandra Meadows picked up the pet food donation box at the Library on behalf of Miss American Star Achievement, an achievement-based group for ladies of all ages that hosted a pet food donation drive inside the Library. This great group of women focus on volunteering, community outreach, and being goodwill ambassadors for much-needed causes. We want to thank them for all the hard work they do for central Virginia and our community. This is just one of the ways the Library partners with local organizations to support our community throughout the year.

And the winners of the “Love Your Library” counting contest are as follows: Crue, Daphne, and Heather. We would like to congratulate our winners and thank everyone who participated. Keep an eye out on our social media accounts in the near future as we have other free raffles and contests in store!
