Snowstorms, Community Service, and the New Year
January is named for the Roman god Janus, protector of gates and doorways. Janus is depicted with two faces, one looking into the past, the other into the future. January’s stone is the garnet, and the flower is the carnation.
Staff, volunteers, and ACLA (Appomattox County Library Association) members want like to thank all our patrons who participated in our many outreach programs for December. Without your generosity, our Think Beyond the Can, Elves for Elders, St. Anne’s Community Christmas Tree, and local food bank donations would not be possible. These programs positively affected local families in need by providing much-needed meals and gifts for the Holiday Season. Without the support of our patrons, these programs would not have been possible.
December has already brought a wintery mix and snow, with more winter weather on the way. Your local public library, (That’s us!), serves the public in many ways. One them is our continuing “Think Beyond the Can” program. What is Think Beyond the Can? An outreach program to accept donations of Meal in a Bag Kits, which will be distributed to households throughout our community to help ensure that every family has access to a warm and nourishing meal during the winter. Donations may be dropped off at the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library during regular business hours. If you would like to participate, the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library has a box of gallon-sized zipper bags with recipe cards in them, so all you have to do is fill the bag and return it to the library. If you know of anyone, or are interested in receiving a selection of Meal in a Bag Kits, residents can register online at: https://www.jrjml.org/finr or call us. The Library will contact you when the Meal in a Bag Kits are available for pickup. In addition, we will be distributing totes of meal kits to some area food banks. On Wednesday, December 10th, the Library and our frosty Library Fairy hosted our Story & Craft Time, featuring the book “How to Catch a Gingerbread Man” by Adam Wallace. Do you have what it takes to catch the Gingerbread Man? The famous storybook character has magically come to life and leapt from the pages during story time! Follow along as the Gingerbread Man runs loose in a bookstore with the help of Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, Peter Rabbit, nursery rhyme characters, and more! If you set the right traps, you might…just might be able to catch this wily cookie and finish the fairy tale! The kids made 3D cardstock gingerbread houses with candy, frosting and snow sticker embellishments, while snacks. Our next Story & Craft Time will be on Wednesday, December 17th, starting at 11:00 am & 12:00 pm. The Library will feature an age-appropriate book followed by a simple craft project and snacks. Everyone is welcome to attend with the understanding that this program is intended for preschool patrons.
We would like to thank ACLA (Appomattox County Library Association) for hosting another “Wrapping for a Cause”. ACLA is this Library’s friends of the library-style group that recruited the services of staff, volunteers and ACLA members to wrap patron’s holiday gifts in exchange for a monetary donation. All donations will support the Library through special purchases, sponsorship of programs, needed supplies, books and other library-related needs.
The winners of the Grinch Kisses & Christmas Candy Counting Contest are Julie Martin with the closets guess and winner of the candy and a t-shirt, runner ups were Katie Ritchie and Wendy Walker, winning a t-shirt each. We would like to thank everyone who took a chance and be sure to look out for future raffles and contests.
In observation of the New Year Holiday the Library will be closing on Wednesday, December 31st at 5:00 pm, and closed all day on Thursday, January 1st. We will reopen for normal business on Friday, January 2nd, starting at 9:30 am. The book drop, located at the back of the building, will remain open.
