Libraries Makes a Difference to Communities
As a part of the Library’s continued celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, and science, there is a free “Science Across America” raffle. The planter is filled with a tote bag, water bottle, seeds, trinkets, crafts, a space puzzle, a science kit and more. It is one entry per person, per visit to the Library, open to everyone of all ages! We will announce the winner of this raffle on Monday, September 28th. Good luck!
The library currently has free copies of the Appomattox Times, August 28, 2026 edition, available for pickup during our regular business hours.
Tuesday, September 1st, was a busy day for the Library as Library Director Cindy made tracks to the Pamplin Train Station for the Pamplin Story & Craft Time. She read the books “Kindness Makes Us Strong”, “Kindness Makes Us Stronger”, “The Mitten Tree”, and “Mindfulness Makes Me Stronger” . The kids enjoyed snacks while making flowers out of construction paper shapes and craft sticks.
Cindy followed up with the Pamplin Depot Creative Class for Adults. This month’s project is to use cyanotype paper, a light-sensitive sun printing paper that produces monochromatic Prussian blue images. . Invented in 1842, you place objects or negatives on the paper, expose it to sunlight, and rinse it in water to create distinct white and deep blue silhouettes. The next Pamplin Depot Creative Class for Adults will be held on Tuesday, October 6th, starting at 3:00 pm. You must be registered to attend. On Tuesday the Jamerson Library hosted a last minute late morning movie for a group of adults who needed a safe place to gather out of the heat. We served snacks and featured a newly released film. We love serving our community through understanding and acceptance of all groups/patrons.
The Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) hosted an informative seminar at the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library on Tuesday, September 1st, to help local families advocate for children with special needs. This organization works to build strong bonds between families and schools and help parents gain confidence and improve educational outcomes for children from birth through age 26, for more information on PEATC please visit their website at: https://peatc.org/. PEATC will return to the Library on Tuesday, October 6th, starting at 3:00 pm in the Library’s community room.
The Library hosted another busy day on Wednesday, September 2nd. We started off with Story & Craft Time with James River State Park. Ranger Megan read the book “Bears, Bears and more Bears” by Jackie Morris followed by snacks and a bear craft project. We want to thank James River State Park and Ranger Megan. Our next Story & Craft Time will be on Wednesday, September 9, starting at 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. James River will return for another Story & Craft Time on October 7.
We want to thank Griffin’s Garden’s for another Library fundraiser. Alexis, owner of this micro flower farm, believes in the Library’s mission, and is doing her part to help supplement the Library’s outreach.
We wrapped up Wednesday with Girls Who code. Girls Who Code is a club designed to help young women learn about science, technology, engineering, math, and how they integrate into their everyday lives. The Jamerson GWC Club welcomes new members from 3rd grade to 12th grade. Please register at https://www.jrjml.org/girlswhocoderegistration/. On Thursday, September 3rd, the Library had two unexpected adult groups that needed a safe place. We hosted two different movie times, one for each group, complete with snacks, and a craft project session. This Library plays an important role for the whole community, including those with disabilities. As a public Library, we embrace and serve, making a difference to the lives we touch.
On Thursday, September 3rd, Virginia Legal Aid Society hosted an interactive seminar on wills in the Library’s community room. Next month’s seminar will be about “Power of Attorney” information on Wednesday, October 7th, starting at 2:00 pm.
Starting Thursday, September 17th, the Jamerson Library will feature our first Film Noir Club! Meet us in the community room at 5:00 pm for some spine-tingling and gritty tales. It was a dark and stormy night ……… the perfect setting for sinister danger, sexy femme fatales, crime dramas, hard-boiled detectives, and fatalistic stories, where heroes rarely get their happily ever-afters, mixed in with a touch of classic black and white films from the 1940s and 1950s. Appomattox County Schools and the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library are hosting a Fall Festival. Meet us in Abbitt Park on Saturday, September 26th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This is a community family-friendly event to promote local services. There will be vendors, games, and fun! Service animals are welcome, but please leave your pets at home.
From Monday, September 28th, through October 3rd, (Saturday) – Jamerson Library Book Fair! Get as excited as you were as a child, and join us for a nostalgic-style book fair in the Library’s community room during normal business hours. The library will have preschool through adult books for sale at an average cost of $2.00 to $10.00 per book. It is suggested that you bring cash or check, as we cannot guarantee the ability to accept credit/debit card.
In observation of the Railroad Festival Weekend and Columbus Day the Jamerson Memorial Library will be closed on Friday, October 9th, Saturday October 10th, and Monday, October 12th. We will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday October 13th, starting at 9:30 am. Our book depository will be CLOSED during this time. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our patrons.
