Falling for Your Local Library
We would like to apologize for two mistakes in the newly printed November Newsletter. The Cat Cafe event was originally incorrectly advertised as happening on October 21st. The correct date is November 21st. Patrons have not missed the opportunity to enjoy some hot coffee or tea and meet some adoptable cats and kittens from the Appomattox County Animal Shelter in the Library’s community room. Furthermore, the Library will now be closed for Thanksgiving from Wednesday, November 25th, through Saturday, November 28th. We will NOT be open till noon on Wednesday, November 25th. Once again we apologize for these errors and have corrected them.
Goodbye October and hello November. November comes from the Latin word novem, “nine,” because this was the ninth month in the early Roman calendar. Although it is now the eleventh month, the name never got changed. November’s birthstone is the yellow topaz and the flower is the chrysanthemum. Some of November’s observances are: Adopt a Senior Pet Month, Family Stories Month, National Peanut Butter Lovers Month, Native American Heritage Month, Picture Book Month, World Vegan Month, Dear Santa Letter Week (7th-13th), National Young Readers Week (8th-12th), All Saints’ Day (1st), World Chili Day (6th), National STEM/STEAM Day (8th), Veterans Day (11th), Homemade Bread Day (17th), Fibonacci Day (23rd), and Thanksgiving Day (25th).
There is a new photo booth display outside the Library. We’re featuring a haunted bookshelf with some Halloween and fall accessories. Everyone is welcome to stop by and take selfies or photos of friends and family. The Library attempts to change out this fun interactive public photo booth monthly or seasonally, to encourage everyone to come to Main Street, shop local and stop by your hometown Library. Don’t forget to come inside for books, movies, magazines, kits, outdoor adventure backpacks, free Wi-Fi, programs and more!
On Monday, October 19th, the ladies from Sun Bonnet Sue Stitchers met up in the Library’s community room for some good conversation and busy hands, especially crocheting and knitting. If you are interested in joining the “hen party”, their next meeting will be on Monday, November 2nd, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Library.
On Tuesday, October 20th, the Library hosted two separate groups of disabled adults for a movie and snack time. We featured a movie about a young lion that journeys to the African savanna, where as the future king, he overcomes betrayal and tragedy to assume his rightful place. This Library is a warm and welcoming venue for several groups of adults with disabilities, and provides an important service to the community, which includes patrons and guests of all abilities. If you have a group that would like the Library to host a craft time, movie, or educational class please feel free to contact our director, Mrs. Cindy Scheu to discuss details by calling her at 434.352.5340 or by email at director@jrjml.org.
Also on Tuesday, the Library hosted retired voice actor and library employee Craig York as he presented a Macabre Collection of Tales of Terror! Craig highlighted tales from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas.
For Wednesday, October 21th’s Story & Craft Time, Library Fairy MaKayla turned in her wings for a witch’s hat and broom as she read the book “My First How to Catch a Witch” by Alice Walstead. Can you catch a witch? It’s the spookiest night of the year and one child has a wish: to trap a witch on her broomstick so she can touch a twinkle star in the sky! Brimming with charming rhymes and delightful art, this Halloween book for kids will enchant little readers as they follow the child, her black cat, and puppy friend in building playful lures for the witch on the broom! The kids enjoyed snacks while creating their own Halloween inspired art using construction paper, crayons, sequins and other embellishments for some sparkly and spooky scenes.
Trick or Treat, the Library can’t be beat! The Library was a guest vendor at Appomattox Elementary School’s Fall Festival. We were located inside the school’s library (of course!) to pass out the latest November edition of the Library’s newsletter and lots of craft projects. We feel so strongly about community outreach and support, that another employee was a volunteer at one of the trunk or treat stations on behalf of the PTO. If you’re a church, organization, business, or are a fair coordinator doing an event, and you would like us there, we would love to come out and support you as you support local venues.
On Friday, October 23rd, the Library hosted another movie time for adults that needed a safe place to enjoy some socialization. This Library prides itself in being open to all patrons, including those with disabilities.
