The seasons are changing and Mother Earth is about to rest until next spring. For patrons who have an an abundance of extra harvest from their own gardens, may we suggest a home for your extra bounty, the Library’s food pantry rack, located in the main foyer. For almost two years the Library has been providing a place for patrons in need another resource to help them through some hard times. They would welcome the opportunity to receive fresh produce to help supplement their nutritional needs. This pantry is just one of the many services and outreach program that the Library provides, as it is our honor to help everyone that walk through our doors in a variety of ways, not just books. Don’t forget that the Library also has a free rack, outside our main doors, for patrons to drop off or take clothes, small household items, and other things that may need a new home.

Coming soon Jamerson Library’s Art Trading Card Club! One of the latest and fastest growing craft trends, ATC (Art Trading Cards). They are miniature original pieces of art measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches (the same as standard sports or gaming cards). Details coming, open to all ages, and everybody!

On Tuesday, September 8th, the Jamerson Library’s director Cindy was full steam ahead moving down the line to the Pamplin Train Depot for this week’s Story & Craft Time and Pamplin Depot Book Club. Cindy read the following books: The Ant’s Secret by Baltasar Margo, Hey, Little Ant by Phillip Hannah Hoose, and Ant Party by Ross Montgomery. The kids enjoyed creating an ant on a log scene and snacks. Cindy wrapped up her day in Pamplin with the Adult Book Club featuring the book “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austin. Join her next week on Tuesday, September 15 starting at 1:00 pm for the Pamplin Depot Story & Craft Time with crafts and snacks.

The horn on the bus goes bark, bark, bark as Spot the book bus was in the Jamerson Library’s back parking lot on Tuesday, September 8th. This dalmatian dog painted bus will be parked on Tuesdays from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm and on Thursdays from 9:50 am to 11:00 am at the Library, located on Main Street in Appomattox through Thursday, October 15th. You can borrow a book from Spot during their scheduled times and you can return Spot and Trot book bus materials to the Library at anytime during normal Library hours, year round. You can drop off donations for the book buses at the Library and a staff member will make sure that all items are turned over to the book buses. These buses are a part of A.L.I.P. (Appomattox Literacy Intervention Project). A.L.I.P. is a  non-profit charitable organization which began in 1996 in order to promote literacy throughout Appomattox County. The Library has been partnering with A.L.I.P. for over a decade to help spread the love of reading to Appomattox.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances Holliday Lake State Park was unable to host this week’s Story & Craft on Wednesday, September 9th, but Library Fairy MaKayla and her underwinglette Oz sparkled through! MaKayla read the book “The Leaf Thief” by Alice Hemming, while Oz fluttered about the help the kids out. The kids enjoyed making leaf inspired tree collages using construction paper, decorative edged scissors, markers and other embellishments while enjoying snacks.

On Thursday, September 10th, we had not one, but two last minute morning booking for a private movie, on behalf of separate groups of disabled adults. We pulled through with a really cool movie about a young squire who embarks on a quest to change his stars, win the heart of an exceedingly fair maiden, and rock his medieval world, and snacks. This Library is known for its acceptance of all patrons and the ability to provide programs and craft sessions for those who need a safe place to be themselves in a nurturing environment that encourages growth by community inclusion.

Also on Thursday was the Library’s first Adult Puzzle Challenge, with the winners being Ryan and Michelle Rushing! Teams of two to four adults where challenged to compete, and each team was given a free copy of Demelsa Haughton’s Rabbit Recital puzzle to take home. We want to thank everyone who participated and look forward to hosting another one in the future.

As a part of the Library’s continued celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, and science, there is a free “Science Across America” raffle. The planter is filled with a tote bag, water bottle, seeds, trinkets, crafts, a space puzzle, a science kit and more. It is one entry per person, per visit to the Library, open to everyone of all ages! We will announce the winner of this raffle on Monday, September 28th. Good luck!

Starting Thursday, September 17th, the Jamerson Library will feature our first Film Noir Club! Meet us in the community room at 5:00 pm for some spine-tingling and gritty tales. It was a dark and stormy night ……… the perfect setting for sinister danger, sexy femme fatales, crime dramas, hard-boiled detectives, and fatalistic stories, where heroes rarely get their happily ever-afters, mixed in with a touch of classic black and white films from the 1940s and 1950s. Appomattox County Schools and the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library are hosting a Fall Festival. Meet us in Abbitt Park on Saturday, September 26th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This is a community family-friendly event to promote local services. There will be vendors, games, and fun! Service animals are welcome, but please leave your pets at home.

From Monday, September 28th, through October 3rd, (Saturday) – Jamerson Library Book Fair! Get as excited as you were as a child, and join us for a nostalgic-style book fair in the Library’s community room during normal business hours. The library will have preschool through adult books for sale at an average cost of $2.00 to $10.00 per book. It is suggested that you bring cash or check, as we cannot guarantee the ability to accept credit/debit card.

Starting in October the Library is celebrating being different and acceptance with another free raffle, featuring Jimothy the famous wild raccoon living in Seattle, Washington, who became a viral internet star in July of 2026 because of his short and round body shape. Veterinarians believe he has a rare spinal deformity or short spine syndrome. We will announce the winner of the Jimothy raffle on Thursday, October 29th, it is one entry per person, per visit.

Join us for an evening of haunted tales with voice actor and Library employee’s Mr. York’s Macabre Collection of Haunted Tales on October 6 and 20 starting at 6:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend with the understanding that this event is for a mature audience.

In observation of the Railroad Festival Weekend and Columbus Day the Jamerson Memorial Library will be closed on Friday, October 9th, Saturday October 10th, and Monday, October 12th. We will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday October 13th, starting at 9:30 am. Our book depository will be CLOSED during this time. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our patrons.
