Drum roll please! And the grand prize winners of our summer reading program are, in the 0-5 age group – Dahlia, in the 6 – 12 age group – Monty, in the 13 – 17 age group Emalyn, and finally in the 18+ group Christie. We would like to congratulate all our 2026 Summer Reading Winners!

Summer reading and its theme “Unearth A Story” may be over but the love of fossils, geodes and gemstones is a fast-growing hobby that crosses age and gender barriers. On display in the foyer is a collection of specimens on that are on loan by several different collectors, including an employee of this library. Watch us grow, and grow your mind with wonder with us.

Just a reminder to our patrons, that the August newsletter is available for pickup at the circulation desk. There is still plenty of time to make plans to join one of our many events going on in August.

Gardening can be a year-round project with the continuous cycle of planning, planting, and harvesting. The Jamerson Library’s seed library is a popular feature during spring and summer, but don’t forget that fall has a growing season as well, and winter is for preparing and planning, as the soil rests. We just added more calendula seeds to this library, so patrons may sew them through late August for a pop of autumn color. Calendula is an herbaceous plant that produces daisy-like flowers, and is also considered an herb for its healing and edible properties. Please do your own research and use caution when using plants for medicinal or cooking uses. Patrons are allowed 3 items per household, per week, from the Seed Library, if supplies are available. If you have extra seeds, bulbs, bareroots or other gardening related items you are encouraged to donate them to the Library’s seed library to share with others. The Library will be putting up a small greenhouse to winter our worm farm during the colder months, and once it warms up enough we will be starting seedlings to promote native plants for bees, butterflies (and moths), and birds. We will be using the greenhouse and worm farm for composting and educational programs.

The Sun Bonnet Sue Stitchers met in the Library’s community room on Monday, Aug 3rd, for good conversation, busy hands, and a show-and-tell of all the beautiful creations that were being worked on. Everyone is welcome to attend, and yes, that includes gentlemen.

On Tuesday, August 4th, Tim Saunders from Virginia Career Works set up a resume help desk in the Library’s community room to help patrons with questions and suggestions on how to improve their resumes. This was to encourage patrons make plans to attend the 2026 Appomattox Job Fair. This is a REGIONAL job fair with more than 30 employers registered to participate! Meet with hiring managers from across Appomattox County and Central Virginia including Lynchburg and Farmville. This free event is happening August 12, at the Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) Appomattox Center, located at 136 Carver Lane in Appomattox from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Library Director Cindy headed up to the Pamplin Depot on Tuesday for Story & Craft time, featuring the books “Infinity and Me”, “The Boy Who Dreamed of Infinity”, and “Infinity: Figuring Out Forever” while the kids enjoyed snacks and creating infinity monsters using cardstock, glue sticks, monster pieces, and other embellishments. This program was paid for by the Infinite Sums Rural and Small Libraries Grant.

Cindy wrapped up Tuesday at the Pamplin Depot with a Creative Class for Adults , introducing Iris Folding. A paper folding technique  which originated in the Netherlands. It gets its name because the finished design resembles the spiraling iris of a camera lens.

Wednesday, August 5th, was a busy day at the Jamerson Library as the Library, in conjunction with the Library of Virginia, featured the  “Like a Wave We Break: Overcoming Burnout to Lead with Resilience and Alignment” program. This live-streaming presentation was hosted by Jane Marie Chen, a national bestselling author, internationally acclaimed inventor, and leadership coach. The Library flowed over to Infinity Dance in Abbitt Park with Library Director Cindy Scheu! She taught the basic moves for fan, poi and dragon flow dancing using free movement and large free-flowing ribbons and poi balls to express your own interpretation of freeform performance art through dance. This program is paid for by the Infinite Sums Rural and Small Libraries Grant.

Wednesday was also “Let’s Dough This”, an introducing to sourdough making. Patrons learned how to make sourdough starter with Adrian Gilbert, from Thankful Acres Family Farm, and got hints and tips on baking up some of the best bread you have ever tried. This program is paid for by the Infinite Sums Rural and Small Libraries Grant.

Thursday, August 6th, was another busy day at the Library. We started off with the “Get Tuned In” program: Fun with Infinity and Sound, using tuning forks, salt and plastic wrap to create visible sound waves. This program is paid for by the Infinite Sums Rural and Small Libraries Grant.

We followed up with the Jamerson Library’s Creative Class for Adults – Clay Bowls (Part II). It was painting day for patrons who had joined us for Part 1 of the Air Clay Bowls project. It was time to pick up the bowls and paint them with an option of different styles and techniques, then taking the finished bowls home! This program is paid for by the Infinite Sums Rural and Small Libraries Grant.

On Saturday, August 8th, the Library’s International Infinity Day celebration culminated with crafts, sand art, and kaleidoscopes activities focused around infinity. Throughout the last two weeks, participants learned how infinity can be seen through dance, soundwaves, sand art, nature and baking. This program was paid for by the Infinite Sums Rural and Small Libraries Grant.

Starting on Tuesday, September 1st, the Library will be hosting another free Raffle. This month’s raffle will be “Science Across America” as we continue to celebrate our Country’s 250 anniversary and the science that we do every day.

The Library will be a guest vendor at the Town of Appomattox’s “Town Picnic” on Thursday, September 3rd, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm in Abbitt Park. Join us for crafts, bubbles and glitter tattoos as we promote Library services! Remember that September is also “Library Card Sign-up Month!

In observation of the Labor Day Holiday, the Library will be closed on Monday, September 7th. We will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday, September 8th, starting at 9:30 am. Our book depository, located at the back of the building, will remain open.

Coming on Thursday, September 17th, Jamerson Library will feature our first Film Noir Club! Meet us in the Community Room at 5:00 pm for some spine-tingling, gritty tales. It was a dark and stormy night ……… the perfect setting for sinister danger, sexy femme fatales, crime dramas, hard-boiled detectives, and fatalistic stories where heroes rarely get their happily ever-afters, mixed in with a touch of classic black and white films from the 1940s and 1950s. The Jamerson Library will be partnering with Appomattox Schools for a Fall Festival on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in Abbitt Park. We will have a patriotic theme with games, craft projects, vendors, giveaways and a whole lot more. Service animals are welcome, but leave your pets at home.
